Is Super Bowl entertainment?

OK, if you look back over the history of the big game, it hasn’t always been the most entertaining of contests. But surely this madness is more than any mere sporting event — it’s a shared national party and that has to be entertainment.

Some folks even watch the Super Bowl just to see the new commercials, which, you have to admit, are plenty entertaining. A lot more than the halftime show usually is, anyway.

I mention this because I proposed posting a note in this entertainment blog about a class coming up in the basics of the game, just in time for the Super Bowl. But a couple of people around the office insisted the Super Bowl didn’t count as entertainment.

If you agree with me, please help me set this person straight. And  if you agree with them, well, let your conscience be your guide.

And if you know someone who’s got the entertainment part down but needs helps with the sport, Emmanuel UCC in Hanover will be offering a a session in the basics of the game this Sunday, Feb. 5, at 11:45 a.m., just hours before the big game. Oh, excuse me, entertainment event. Call 632-8281 for more information.

The Super Bowl is purely entertainment as far as I’m concerned. I watch it nearly every year, but not because I love football. I watch the game because I’m entertaining (there’s that word again) friends. Truth be told, I don’t really watch the game at all. I eat, I socialize and yes, I watch the commerecials. Maybe it’s because I don’t really understand the game. I know what a touchdown is and I know what a first down it. But even that took years. I always say the happiest day of my husband’s life was when I finally understood what a first down was. So thanks to Emmanuel UCC for doing their part. It’s a cool idea. I’m sure men everywhere will thank you!
