By the numbers

A look at some historical comparisons as the 2012-13 high school winter sports season winds down.
1) The 200-yard freestyle championship which Delone Catholic’s Victoria Griffin achieved Friday in the District 3 Class AA Swimming Championships continues a Hanover area tradition.
In fact, the 200 freestyle has been won by a Hanover area swimmer twice before Friday – Bermudian Springs’ Kristin Brown in 2002 and, in Class AAA, Gettysburg’s Tricia Weaner in 2007.

2) When Delone Catholic’s Jim Dooley recorded his 700th career coaching victory recently, that total included his time coaching in Iceland.
However, he is rapidly compiling big numbers coaching high school basketball in the Hanover area as well.
With Friday’s District 3 Class AA championship, Dooley’s record at Delone improved to 186-83 in 10 seasons. Couple that with his 145-147 mark in 12 campaigns at Gettysburg High and he has a 331-230 record, ranking among the leading winners in the Hanover area.
However, he still trails some noteworthy coaches, including the man he followed at Gettysburg, Merrill Eckhart, who posted 384 wins. Jake Diviney continues to hold the Hanover area mark for coaching wins with 452 achieved at both East Berlin and New Oxford high schools.
And let’s not forget his girls’ basketball counterpart at Delone. Gerry Eckenrode is directing his 14th season and has a 337-99 record, a winning percentage of 77.2. That ranks higher than the previous standard bearer for winning percentage in the Hanover area, Hanover’s Frank Noonan, whose boys’ teams won 76 percent of their games.

3) Believe it or not, all of the above men fall short of a swimming coach. South Western’s Bill Sterner’s 510 dual-meet victories in 40 seasons set a Hanover area standard which may never be reached in any sport. especially in today’s climate of all too brief coaching careers.

4) Now that Delone has won back-to-back District 3 crowns, the next challenge will be a three-peat, something that no Hanover area boys’ team has done since Gettysburg won the trifecta … back in 1941-43.

Sportsnight: Mason excited to manage Revolution

By Daniel Paulling

There’s at least one thing new Mark Mason is looking forward to as he moves from pitching coach to replace Andy Etchebarren as York Revolution manager.

“It’ll be nice to manage the game and have a little more interaction with the umpires,” he said, before laughing, at the 24th Annual Hanover Rotary Sportsnight. “It was really hard for me to have some interaction because I didn’t know when Etch would vacate the premises. I had to make sure I struck around to pick it up if he had to leave.”

Etchebarren is retiring after three-plus seasons with the Revolution. He inherited a team that led the Atlantic League with 87 losses in 2009 and won two Atlantic League championships under his tenure.

But Mason doesn’t feel any more pressure.

“Every year, our expectation is to at least make the playoffs,” he said. “As far as the opportunity to try to keep our momentum going that we’ve established, keep the fan base happy by putting a good product on the field, it’s a good challenge.”

It appears the Revolution will have significant turnover. Mason said about “50 to 60 percent” of the guys will return from last year’s 79-61 team. He’s already begun the process of filling out the remainder of this year’s team.

In addition to managing the team, his job, in a sense, is to make sure those players sign elsewhere as soon as possible.

“For me, I want to see every guy move on (to a major league-affiliated team),” Mason said. “That’s my number one mission: to bring in the best guys available and get them signed and get out of here. It would not upset me if every guy I bring to spring training makes it out of camp and signs a big league contract before the all-star break. We’re trying to make them better and not hold anybody back.”

Sportsnight: South Western’s Bean to audition for Texas Rangers

By Daniel Paulling

South Western senior Parker Bean is playing well for the Mustangs basketball team, but on Saturday, he’ll showcase the right arm that has made him attractive to college coaches and professional teams as a baseball player.

Bean, who was elected as a finalist for the 24th Annual Hanover Rotary Sportsnight Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, will participate in an audition with about 20 other players from the vicinity in a showcase for the Texas Rangers. He will just throw a bullpen session.

The audition comes after being chosen by the San Diego Padres for a high school baseball showcase. He has been working on rounding out his pitch selection, which now includes a four-seam fastball that reaches the low 90s, two-seam fastball, changeup, curveball and slider.

Bean, who is 6-feet-6, is considered one of the top high school players in Pennsylvania and was chosen for the Big 26 baseball tournament after his junior season. He has accepted an athletic scholarship from Liberty University.

Former Gettysburg board members happy with move

By Daniel Paulling

The YAIAA approved Gettysburg’s petition to join last week, welcome news to two former board members who were part of a vote against the measure in the late 1990s. Former board vice president Dale Biesecker recalled the vote being either 8-1 or 7-2 with him voting to leave the Mid-Penn.

He remembered one Gettysburg team having to travel to State College for an event last fall, which seemed too far away. He wanted the athletes not to miss so much class time.

“Some of these games, the kids leave a couple hours before school’s out,” Biesecker said. “The big thing is that we got to have our kids at school because of all the (standardized) tests and stuff. If you’re taking the kids out of school for an hour or two, we’re defeating the purpose.”

Entering the meeting in the late 1990s, he said the board’s mood was to leave the Mid-Penn in favor of the YAIAA, which is filled with closer schools. Some last-minute politicking changed that.

“We had some people who had a dream that Gettysburg would become state champions,” Biesecker said. “The deal was, the best I could explain it, the bigger schools you played, the more points you got toward the championship. Consequently, there were people who convinced the board members to vote to stay in the Mid-Penn league.

“I would say, my personal opinion, a lot of it was coaches. They had this foresight we were going to be a state champion in a number of sports.”

Pat Symmes, who was the president at the time, said the issue of leaving had been raised off and on for about 10 years and that the desire to leave was split about 50-50. She also recalled coaches arguing for staying when the measure was last presented to the board.

“You’d hear the position from the coaches, mostly football, that we need to stay here so kids can be seen and get scholarships,” she said. “I never believed that. You can get a scholarship wherever you play football.

“I frankly am happy they’re doing this. One of the concerns we always had as being board members was when the kids would have to leave school to go play. The further away, the most class time that they missed.”

Former Eagle surprised by charges against Bonner

By Daniel Paulling

Former Bermudian Springs baseball and golf coach Robert Bonner was charged Thursday with propositioning a 17-year-old female student for sex in 2011.

The alleged victim said Bonner called her out of a psychology final and handed her a piece of paper and told her to go to the end of the hall and read it, according to an affidavit of probable cause, which also said the hand-written note said Bonner wanted to have sex with her and his wife and asked if she were interested.

The Bermudian Springs board of education granted Bonner a sabbatical during its August meeting and approved his resignation in September. The events surprised former Eagles  shortstop Joe Dennison, who now attends York College.

“It was very surprising,” he said of hearing the news. “I did not see that coming from him at all. He did not come off that way. I heard rumors about it through people that were still in school. They heard stuff from other teachers and stuff.

“I was shocked at first. But then, I still look at him as a coach who coached the state championship team (in 2010) and a guy that was a great coach to me for the four years that I had him. He was teaching me to play the game I loved.”

Spring Grove junior David Shaw received a scholarship offer Monday afternoon from the University of Maryland. It was the first for the 6-foot-4, 270-pound defensive lineman.

Rockets coach Russ Stoner, in a story last season, said this is just the start for Shaw.

“He’s going to have some choices where he wants to go,” said Stoner, who later added Shaw could have between 20 and 25 scholarship offers.

Shaw’s two older brothers, Jim and John, both played at Penn State. Their father, James, played offensive line at Colgate before it became an FCS (what previously was called Division I-AA) school.

Shaw finished this season with 54 tackles for the Rockets.

Gettysburg looking at leaving Mid-Penn for YAIAA

By Daniel Paulling

The Gettysburg Area School District Board of Education will vote Monday on whether it would be interested in leaving the Mid-Penn for the YAIAA. The YAIAA hasn’t extended an offer, but talks have been on-going.

“We’ve been briefed on it,” Board of Education president Todd Orner said. “There didn’t seem to be any major questions. The board will support the administration’s recommendation.”

He believes moving to the YAIAA would save the school money because the schools are closer, reducing travel costs. Orner, a 1980 graduate of Gettysburg, also liked the fact that several schools from the Blue Mountain League, of which the Warriors were a member, have moved to the YAIAA, bringing back several rivalries.

Calls to Gettysburg principal Mark Blanchard and athletic director Carlos Wampler were not immediately returned. More information will be added as the story develops.
